National Parks are usually open to visitors and have sites for camping and recreation. The intent of the parks is to conserve important national environments and educate visitors. 1. Crater Lake National Park
Crater Lake is one of the most unique lakes you’ll probably ever see, as it’s comprised of water collected in the crater of a dormant volcano. September is one of the best times to visit, because by late October it’s already winter there again. The lake is surrounded by 2,000 foot cliffs that make for gorgeous photos. Popular sites to see include the Pumice Desert, the Pinnacles, and Rim Drive.
2. The Great Smoky Mountains
Not only are the Great Smokys the most visited of the National Parks in America, but they are also home to the largest sections of old growth forests in the Eastern half of the country. There are many great vantage points available to see the bursts of colors that birch, oak and poplar trees will be displaying along every trail and mountainside. Interestingly, elevations affect when colors change in this park. At higher elevations the colors change in mid September, while lower elevations hang on to green until the beginning of October.
3. Grand Teton National Park
If you’re looking for a showstopping leaf show, this might be the place. The large amounts of deciduous trees, or trees whose leaves will turn yellow, orange and red as they die, make Grand Teton a brightly colorful place in autumn. You might also see a lot of local wildlife this time of year. Elks and mooses will be searching for mates, and bears will be bulking up before it’s time to hibernate later in the season. Out of many United States National Parks, Grand Teton is better known for its diverse wildlife.
